Meghalaya Mourns: Sudden Passing of Dr. Ricky A.J. Syngkon, Shillong MP

Shillong, February 19, 2026 — The state of Meghalaya has been struck by profound grief following the unexpected death of Dr. Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon, the newly-elected Member of Parliament from the Shillong Lok Sabha constituency.

Dr. Syngkon, 54, collapsed suddenly during a friendly football match in Mawlai Mawiong on Thursday evening. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead later that night, leaving behind a legacy of public service and a large community in mourning.

An Abrupt and Heartbreaking Incident

According to eyewitnesses, Dr. Syngkon was enjoying a casual game with friends when he unexpectedly fell ill on the field. He was first taken to the Mawiong Community Health Centre, but due to the absence of a doctor at the facility, he was transferred urgently to Dr H. Gordon Roberts Hospital in Jaiaw.

Medical teams at the hospital worked swiftly to save his life. However, Dr. Syngkon could not be revived and was declared dead at approximately 8:42 PM. The sudden nature of his collapse has left friends, colleagues, and residents shocked and deeply saddened.

A Leader Emerges: His Journey in Public Life

Dr. Syngkon’s rise in politics was marked by commitment and steady public engagement. In the 2024 General Elections, he was elected to the 17th Lok Sabha as the voice of the people from Shillong, representing the Voice of the People Party (VPP). His victory was historic: he unseated veteran politician Vincent H.P. Pala, a three-time MP, signalling a new chapter in Meghalaya’s political landscape.

Before entering politics, Dr. Syngkon was an academic with a strong foundation in economics and education. His approach to governance reflected both intellectual depth and a practical focus on community empowerment.

Outpouring of Condolences and Public Grief

Leaders across party lines expressed their shock and sadness at the news of his passing:

  • Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma paid tribute to Dr. Syngkon’s dedication, describing him as a leader “committed to the welfare of the people.”

  • Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, fellow legislators, and party workers were among those who rushed to the hospital upon learning of the crisis.

  • Messages of condolence poured in from colleagues, youth leaders, and residents, reflecting the high regard in which he was held.

A Legacy Cut Short

Though his tenure in Parliament had just begun, Dr. Syngkon had already made a meaningful impact. His election represented a desire for renewed leadership and an engagement with issues affecting everyday citizens — from education and community development to infrastructure and economic opportunity.

His sudden departure has left a significant void in Meghalaya’s political sphere, particularly in Shillong, where many saw him as a leader with the potential to bring transformative change.

Looking Ahead: Final Rites and Public Tributes

Details regarding state honours and funeral arrangements are being finalised by family members and government officials. Authorities are expected to make formal announcements as plans take shape.

For the people of Shillong and Meghalaya, Dr. Ricky A.J. Syngkon’s passing is not just a political loss but a deeply personal moment of mourning for a leader who stood for hope, service, and dedication.
